The search feature in Windows 7 is much faster because Windows 7 includes all the performance improvements from Windows Search 4.0, a Windows technology that indexes all the files on your PC, as well as several other significant new performance improvements.

You can also improve the search feature by adding new locations to the search index. Refer our how to add new locations to search index in Windows 7 guide.

A Windows user might want to disable the search feature for some reason. If you want to disable/turn off this feature in your Windows 7 OS, just follow the steps given below to make it happen:

1. Go to Start menu, click Control Panel, click Uninstall a program to launchPrograms and features window. The same can be launched by typing appwiz.cpl in Run dialog box and pressing enter.

2. Next, in the left pane of Programs and Features window, click Turn Windows features on or off. Click Yes button if you are prompted with UAC.

3. Scroll down Windows Features list to see Windows Search option. Uncheck the box, click Yes for the prompt and click Ok.

5. Reboot your machine to complete the procedure.

Note: Once this feature is disabled, you can’t see search box in Start menu and Windows explorer. You need to enable Windows Search in Programs and Features to see the missing search box.
